The most popular of the Airsoft guns, the automatic electric gun (AEG) is largely responsible for the boom in airsoft interest in the late 1990s. The most expensive, AEG’s are also the most desirable in the airsoft gun family. Operation
The automatic electric airsoft gun is powered by an on-board Ni-Cad battery that operates a small but powerful motor. The motor drives the mechbox (also known as the gearbox). The mechbox translates the rotational movement of the electric motor into a reciprocating motion for the piston, using a set of gears. The mechbox also loads BBs into the breech (where the BB is housed before firing), powers each shot, and provides the semi and full automatic functionality of the gun.

Functionality
This is where the magic of the automatic electric airsoft gun begins. Pulling the trigger completes a simple electrical circuit that causes the motor to spin. The mechbox in turn causes the piston to compress and release. This piston motion creates a blast of air that propels the 6mm BB through the barrel of the gun. This fully automated system creates the power needed to support the rapid-fire feature. This includes a rate of fire (ROF) of anywhere between 600-900 rounds-per-minute (RPM). Usually standard with AEGs is a high capacity magazine (a detachable part of the gun that holds the ammunition ready for shooting). These mags hold several hundred shots instead of the normal fifty.

Upgrade
Most automatic electric guns have the capacity to be upgraded. These upgrades include power/accuracy upgrades, add-on accessories and custom modifications. The premier manufacturer of AEGs is Tokyo Marui of Japan. T.M. products come with high quality construction and a large number of after-market upgrades and support. The average price of these guns is around $300.
